Accessibility

All OSL buses feature low floors either entirely or only on the front half. The buses also tilt to ease boarding. Buses include a button to keep the doors open longer for passengers with wheelchairs or baby carriages. Some buses also include a similar button for mobility-impaired people.

Lines to Hailuoto are an exception. The lines are operated on high-floor tourist buses that do not include the accessibility solutions listed on this page. The accessibility of Hailuoto lines will improve as new contracts come into effect in June of 2027.

Travelling for visually impaired people

A seat in the first row, behind the driver, is reserved for visually impaired passengers and their guide dogs. The STOP button is on the wall by the seat.

Yellow safety color has been used along the edges of the button for contrast. The buttons have braille writing, and pressing the button creates a sound.

The contrast between the cabin screen’s background color and text color is accessible, and the font is rectangular. Buses operating under newer contracts use bus stop announcements. When asked, the driver will announce the bus stops to the passenger.

The newer buses include yellow safety color for contrast by entry doors and exits, as well as on platforms. Also, rails and bars by the exit doors and handles for standing passengers are all yellow. Newer buses will cast light over the bus stop when the exit doors are open.

The lightest possible suitable fabric is used for seating upholstery to create contrast against passengers wearing dark clothing. If there is a visually impaired passenger at the bus stop with a white cane, the driver will stop and announce the line and direction of their bus.

Timetables can be read on the accessible website at the address osl.fi. In English, at osl.fi/en/.

Assistance and guide dogs

As other pets, assistance and guide dogs may travel on OSL buses without charge. You may always board the bus with assistance or guide dogs, even when there is already a passenger on the bus who is allergic to dogs. The passenger traveling with assistance and guide dogs must have a valid travel ticket.

Travelling for mobility-impaired people

There are separately marked seats for mobility-impaired passengers at the front and middle of buses. At the front of some buses, there are horizontal rails installed between opposite seats and handrails to ease getting up from seats.

Travelling with wheelchairs, electric moped, or rollator

Most buses include a ramp by the middle door. The combined weight of the electric wheelchair and the user must not exceed over 300 kg due to the ramp’s weight limit. In order to open the ramp, you will need an assistant. If needed, you can ask the driver to open the ramp for you.

Wheelchair seating is marked in the middle of the bus, behind the front seats. The newer buses include a railing and safety belt.

It is not permitted to board OSL buses with an electric moped.

There are folding chairs in the middle part of the bus opposite the doors for rollator users. It is not permitted to sit on your rollator during travel for safety reasons.

Travelling for hearing-impaired people

You can see the timetables at the addresses reittiopas.osl.fi and osl.fi. You will find the timetables in English at the addresses reittiopas.osl.fi/en.

During travel, the next stop and the end stop are displayed on the bus screens. Some buses only display the end stop. The OSL App includes a guidance function that helps you follow the bus’s real-time location between bus stops.

After pressing the STOP button, text displaying “STOP” or “Pysähtyy” will be displayed on the bus screen. In newer buses, the button’s light will turn from red to green after being pressed. Some buses include a separate STOP light that will turn red after the button is pressed.

Right to travel with an escort

The escort of EU Disability Card holders may travel free of charge if the Card has the label “A”. The Card must be presented to the driver when boarding. Card holders must have a valid travel ticket.

Wheelchair users and assistants may always travel free of charge, and the wheelchair users do not need to present their Disability Card to the driver.

Travelling with baby carriages

Baby carriage seating is reserved in the middle part of the bus, marked either with a sticker on the wall or a carriage symbol on the floor. When climbing aboard and exiting, you may extend the time the doors stay open by pressing the baby carriage button.

Buying tickets

You can purchase tickets with the OSL App, contactless payment, ticket sales, and the waltti.fi online store. Single tickets can be purchased from the driver.

If you purchase an OSL Card from the online store, the Card will be delivered to your home by mail within two weeks.

OSL tickets are sold at R-Kioski vendors and Oulu10 Customer Service points. OSL Cards can be purchased and immediately received from Oulu10 Customer Service Points. Oulu10 Customer Service Points are fully accessible. Read more about the accessibility of Oulu10 Customer Service points on the city of Oulu website.

How to use tickets

Tickets are validated each time you board a bus on the ticket machine installed in the front of the bus, next to the driver’s seat. When the ticket is validated, the machine will let out a brief sound signal and a green circle with a white checkmark will appear on the screen. When the validation fails, the machine will let out a low, long sound signal and a red ball with a white cross will appear on the screen.

How to use mobile tickets or tickets with QR codes

Open the ticket on your phone before boarding. Place the phone approximately 10 cm below the ticket machine and keep the phone steady. Some buses include a platform under the machine onto which you may place your phone. The platform uses pink safety color to create contrast. Follow the same method for all tickets with QR codes.

How to use the OSL Card

If your OSL Card has enough value to buy a single ticket or includes only a season ticket, place the Card under the ticket machine’s screen. The machine will read the season ticket or charge the amount of one single ticket from your Card automatically.

If your OSL Card has enough value and an installed season ticket and you are travelling alone, place the card under the ticket machine’s screen. If you are buying a single ticket for another passenger with value on your OSL Card, first validate your season ticket by placing the Card under the ticket machine’s screen, then press the “poikkeusmatka” button on the screen and place your Card under the ticket machine’s screen again. Your Card will be charged the amount of one single ticket automatically.

How to buy single tickets with contactless payment

You may buy single tickets with your Visa, Visa Electron, Mastercard and Eurocard debit/credit card’s contactless payment method by choosing the contactless payment option on the ticket machine’s screen and placing your card to the side of the ticket machine.

Tickets from the diver

You may buy single tickets from the driver also with cash, preferably with exact change.
