Contactless payment

In Oulu Regional Transport, you can pay for your journey on the bus using contactless payment.

A single ticket is valid for 90 minutes and costs 2,90 € for all customer groups. The price includes 13,5 % VAT.

The three pay caps in use — 1, 7 and 30 days — make contactless payment a combination of a single ticket, day ticket and season ticket. A pay cap means that journeys paid for with the same contactless payment method have a fixed maximum price for a specific period.

For example, journeys made on the same day between 00:00 and 23:59 and paid for using the same contactless payment method are added together, and you will be charged no more than the one day pay cap, which is 11,00 €.

Use a debit card or payment app

Contactless payment feature works on Visa, Visa Electron, Mastercard, and Eurocard debit cards. You can also pay your fare using Google Pay or Apple Pay mobile payment app.

Your debit card works as your personal bus ticket, which is why you can only use contactless payment to pay for your own journey.

The date of the charge on your bank statement may not be the same as the travel date. The charge for the bus ticket will appear on your statement approximately two days later, sometimes later. There are differences between banks in this regard.

Transfers between buses using contactless payment

Repeat the process from your first journey. Select contactless payment on the ticket device and present your contactless card or device to the reader. You can transfer between buses as many times as needed within the 90-minute validity period of a single journey ticket without any additional charge.

Use the same payment method to accumulate pay caps

Pay for all of your day’s travels with the same debit card or mobile payment app by using contactless payment. Building up charges to the daily cap will start over if you use a different payment method, even if you have connected the same debit card to your mobile payment app. Choose one payment method (debit card or mobile payment app) and stick with it for the whole day.

In addition to the one day pay cap, OSL also uses 7 day and 30 day pay caps. When you pay for each journey using the same contactless payment method, the charges also automatically count towards the longer period pay caps. Once the pay cap defined for a one, seven or thirty day calculation period is reached, you can travel using contactless payment free of charge until the end of that period.

The pay caps are priced at the same level as the adult day and season tickets corresponding to the length of the calculation periods. The pay cap prices are the same for all customer groups.

How pay caps work

If you make several journeys and pay each time using the same contactless payment method, the ticket device recognises your payment method, and the system automatically accumulates the pay caps.

The 1 day pay cap is calculated based on journeys made during the same day between 00:00 and 23:59.

From 1 June 2026, the calculation periods for the 7 day and 30 day pay caps will start from the first journey you pay for using contactless payment. That travel date is the first day of the calculation period. The duration of the periods is calculated in calendar days. For example, the calculation period for the 7 day pay cap ends on the seventh day of the period at 23:59.

After this, a new pay cap starts accumulating from the next journey you pay for using contactless payment.

If you change your payment card or mobile device during a pay cap calculation period, the charges accumulated earlier will not transfer to the new payment method.

The pay caps work simultaneously. This means that the ticket device calculates the accumulation of all three pay caps each time you pay for your journey using the same contactless payment method. For one day, you will always be charged a maximum of 11,00 € for travelling with contactless payment; during a 7 day calculation period, a maximum of 44,50 €; and during a 30 day calculation period, a maximum of 64,00 €. You therefore do not need to decide in advance which pay cap you want to accumulate.

When a pay cap is reached

The ticket device recognises when the price of the journeys you have paid for reaches a pay cap. When boarding the bus, select contactless payment on the ticket device and present your contactless card or device to the reader. The ticket device confirms the contactless payment but will not charge you for the journey if the pay cap for the calculation period has been reached.

After the pay cap has been reached, you can continue travelling with the same contactless payment method free of charge until the current calculation period for that pay cap ends.

If contactless payment fails

When you try to pay with contactless payment and the bus ticket machine reports a malfunction, there can be several reasons:

  • The connection between the ticket machine, the payment agent and the bank was not successful. In this case, insert the card into the ticket machine again and hold it there for a moment.
  • Your previous trip has not been charged.
  • The card does not have enough funds.
  • Your payment card has expired.
  • Your payment card’s security limits are full.

If contactless payment fails, the driver will ask you to pay for your trip in another way.
