Kela can grant school transport subsidy if your child in upper secondary school or vocational education has to travel 7 kilometres or more one way to get to school.
Applications for school transport subsidy can be made in the OmaKela e-service (www.kela.fi/omakela, available in Finnish and Swedish). Your child must have their own online banking codes or a Mobile Certificate to log in to OmaKela to submit an application for the subsidy. We recommend that you get online banking codes or a Mobile Certificate for your child in any case because they will need it to get their subsidised tickets directly from the OSL’s online store (waltti.fi/en).
Before you get a ticket, help your child check in OmaKela if they have the right to school transport subsidy. If a student travels to school by public transport, they will receive a free travel ticket from the OSL online store when school starts.
Ticket either to the OSL app or to the OSL card
The school transport subsidy ticket can only be downloaded in one place: either to the OSL app or to the OSL card. If a student downloads the ticket to both the card and the app during the same month, according to Kela, they have used two months of travel tickets in one month. Each download consumes the right to a free ticket.
